How you can retain your personal files after formatting or reinstalling your Operating System

The fear of losing one's personal files can be unbearable so you are always advised to backup your personal files from your laptop or desktop in an external storage device. The possibility of the operating system on one's laptop or desktop getting crashed or corrupted is inevitable. In most cases the next alternative is to reinstall the OS. The good news is that if you don't have an external device to back your files up you can take some precautionary measures to create a separate partition on your laptop or desktop to save your important files should in case anything happen to your Operating system.


How to create a separate partition on Windows laptop or desktop from the original C: drive that came preinstalled with your laptop.
You can create a partition while your system is running
For most laptop it comes as the Local Disk C: Drive

1. Go to Disk Management,
       Right click on Computer and select Manage
       Click on Disk Management
2. Once the Disk Management window opens right click on the C: drive and select shrink volume.
Enter the amount of space you want to shrink the partition to
Note: You can only shrink base on the available space on the C: drive. You will not be allowed to enter value more than the available space

Once the process completes. Right click inside the Unallocated space and select New Simple Volume

Follow the steps and assign drive letter and name to the partition. Once completed you now have a separate Hard drive partition on your ;laptop or desktop

To locate the newly created partition, go to My Computer
